Do I need a passport to travel to Mexico? ▼
Yes, a valid passport is required. It must not expire within 6 months of your travel dates.
What is Visitax and do I need to pay it? ▼
Visitax is a required tourism tax ONLY for travelers visiting Quintana Roo (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum). It can be paid online before travel or at the airport using this official website: https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/. I’ll let you know if it applies to your trip.
Can I drink the water at the resort? ▼
Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth, even at the resort. Ice at resorts is usually fine, as it’s made with purified water.
Should I bring cash? ▼
Yes—bring small bills in U.S. dollars for tips and small purchases. Many places take cards, but cash is handy for excursions, souvenirs, and tipping.
How do I find my transfer when I land? ▼
After customs, exit the airport and look for your transfer rep holding a sign with your travel company’s logo. Avoid stopping to talk to people inside offering rides or excursions—they’re usually selling timeshares.
Is tipping expected in Mexico? ▼
Yes—tipping is customary and appreciated. Plan to tip bellhops ($1-2 per bag), housekeeping ($2-5/day), bartenders ($1-2 per round), and restaurant servers (10-15%).
Will I have Wi-Fi at the resort? ▼
Most resorts offer free Wi-Fi in common areas and rooms, though speed and reliability can vary. WhatsApp is great for communicating with staff or home.
What should I pack for a Mexico vacation? ▼
Bring lightweight clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, sandals, a hat, sunglasses, and a light sweater for cooler evenings. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle, medications, and chargers.
What if I get sick or need medicine while in Mexico? ▼
Most resort areas have pharmacies nearby, and many common medications are available over the counter. For serious issues, resorts can assist with a doctor visit or direct you to a nearby clinic. Travel insurance can help with coverage.
Do I need a power adapter in Mexico? ▼
No—Mexico uses the same plugs and voltage as the U.S. (Type A/B, 110 volts). You’re good to go!
What can I bring back from Mexico? ▼
You can bring back up to $800 USD worth of souvenirs duty-free. Limit alcohol to 1 liter per person over 21, and avoid bringing fresh produce or meat. Declare anything you’re unsure about.
What time zone is Mexico in? ▼
Most beach destinations like Cancun and Riviera Maya are on Eastern Time. Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta follow Mountain Time. Your phone should update automatically when you land.
Is there a one-page summary with many of these questions? ▼
Yes! If you’d like a quick reference guide, click the link in the page header labeled Mexico Destination Guide to download a printable one-page overview.
