Do I need a passport to travel to the Dominican Republic?
▼
Yes. A valid passport is required. While the Dominican Republic does not enforce a strict 6-month rule for U.S. travelers, I strongly recommend having at least 6 months of validity remaining.
What is the Dominican Republic e-Ticket?
▼
All travelers must complete the free electronic entry and exit form (called the e-Ticket).
You’ll do this once for arrival and once for departure.
After submitting, you’ll receive a QR code—save a screenshot on your phone.

How do I find my transfer when I arrive?
▼
After clearing customs, exit the terminal and look for your transfer company representative—usually in uniform with your name or company logo. Ignore anyone offering rides or tours inside the airport; those are typically timeshare or sales reps.
What should I NOT do at the Dominican Republic airport?
▼
A few important tips to keep arrival smooth:
- Do not stop to talk to anyone inside the terminal offering rides, tours, or “help.” These are usually timeshare or sales reps.
- Do not share your passport, boarding pass, or phone with anyone other than official immigration or airline staff.
- Do not assume the first exit is your transfer area. Walk fully outside and look specifically for your transfer company or instructions.
- Do not exchange money at aggressive kiosks in the terminal. Rates are often poor. Resorts and ATMs are better options.
- Do not feel rushed. Airport staff may move quickly, but take your time and follow your documents.
Can I drink the water at the resort?
▼
Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth, even at the resort. Ice at resorts is typically safe since it’s made with purified water.
What currency should I bring?
▼
U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially at resorts and for tipping. Small bills are best. Credit cards are commonly used, but always double-check whether you’re being charged in USD or Dominican pesos.
Is tipping expected in the Dominican Republic?
▼
Yes—tipping is customary and appreciated. Many resorts include a service charge, but extra tipping is common for good service. Typical tips: bellhops $1–2 per bag, housekeeping $2–5 per day, bartenders $1–2 per drink.
Are vapes or e-cigarettes allowed in the Dominican Republic?
▼
Vapes and e-cigarettes are legal for personal use, but they are not widely sold locally. Resorts may restrict where they can be used, and confiscation at airports has been reported. I recommend leaving them at home to avoid issues.
Will I have Wi-Fi at the resort?
▼
Most resorts offer complimentary Wi-Fi in rooms and common areas. Speeds can vary, especially during peak times. WhatsApp is commonly used for communication.
What should I pack for a Dominican Republic vacation?
▼
Pack lightweight clothing, swimwear, sandals, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, bug spray, and a light layer for evenings. Some resorts require collared shirts or closed-toe shoes for dinner.
Do I need a power adapter?
▼
No. The Dominican Republic uses the same plugs and voltage as the U.S. (Type A/B, 110 volts).
What time zone is the Dominican Republic in?
▼
The Dominican Republic is on Atlantic Standard Time and does not observe daylight saving time. Depending on the season, it may be the same as or one hour ahead of Eastern Time.
